MANITOU SPRINGS, COLO. -- A body was found under a trailer in Manitou Springs Monday afternoon.
Manitou Springs Police officers received a 911 call around 12:30 p.m. from a man who had just found the body in a trailer park on El Paso Boulevard.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, Manitou P.D. called in the El Paso County Sheriff's Office which has since taken over the investigation.
"We were cleaning under the trailer, and we saw what appeared to be a quilt with junk it in," Bob Derge said.
Derge found the body while working and said when he reached under the trailer to grab the quilt, he saw some hair and assumed it was an animal.
"I thought I had better get another look, so I went around to the other side, and sure enough I saw an ear and some flesh," Derge said.
Realizing he had found human remains, Derge said he immediately called police.
"From what I know, the guy that was in there was arrested for something earlier this year," Derge said. "We were cleaning up after him because he moved out, and that is what we found."
Few details have been released, including the gender and identity of the body, the cause of death and how long he or she has been dead.
"I am thinking winter, the body freezing and being wrapped in something, it was preserved," Derge said.
Derge said he has seen some strange things is his lifetime, but added he never expected in a million years to stumble upon a body.
"You are not expecting it, I mean I am thinking I am grabbing a blanket full of trash and all of a sudden you pull it back and it is like, wow," he said.
