COLORADO CITY, COLO. -- Pueblo County Sheriff's deputies said a man was injured and is recovering at a Denver hospital after a house fire in Colorado City south of Pueblo Saturday.

Deputies said a woman called 911 to report a fire in a bedroom closet around 7:43 p.m. The Rye Fire District responded with deputies and found out a man was still in the house in the 6000 block of Waco Mish Road.

The first firefighter and deputy tried to enter the house but had to leave because of too much smoke. They again entered the home when backup crews arrived and were able to rescue the man, 39-year-old Michael Baker.

Baker is currently at University Hospital in Denver being treated for multiple injuries.

The first deputy was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation and released, but no firefighters were hurt.

"The Rye fire crew did a phenomenal job last night saving the life of this individual and extinguishing this fire.  Add to that the great partnership with the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Taylor and other Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office members were here assisting in this incident any way they could.” Rye Fire Capt. Jim Beach said.
