COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- There have been three pit bull attacks reported to the authorities this week.

Thursday a Colorado Springs man took drastic measures when he shot and killed a pit bull.

Bud Linton walked through what happened that afternoon. He said the two dogs, a pit bull and a boxer, jumped his three-foot fence and started fighting with his German Shepherd.

After getting them separated and securing his dog in the home, Linton walked from his back door to the front of his house and saw the pit bull and boxer focus their attention on a woman walking her two dogs.

"I probably would have not shot another dog like that, but he came at me. He was going to eat me, and I had no choice but to shoot," Linton said.

According to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, 700 calls a year come in for aggressive animals.

They're deemed aggressive because they have bitten a person or have aggressive behavior towards another animal.

While this week's attacks are not normal, there is no needed legal action against a breed.

"[We don't] believe in breed-specific legislation simply because it's proven to be ineffective," Joe Stafford, Director of Animal Law Enforcement for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, said.

Stafford added this incident could have been avoided with a responsible pet owner. That means to license your dog, keep them on a leash when off your property, and contain them at home.

Because any breed at any time can bite.

"It could have been children that were being attacked and eaten. I want owners to face up to the fact that these dogs are vicious and take responsibility," Linton said.
