COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (AP) -- The U.S. Postal Service is closing four mail processing centers in Colorado as part of a broader plan to consolidate or close facilities around the country, starting in mid-May.
Postal Service spokesman David Rupert says centers in Alamosa, Colorado Springs, Durango and Salida will close, affecting 272 employees. He says the Colorado Springs center employs about 250 people, Alamosa employs five, Salida employs one and Durango employs 16.
He says some affected workers could be reassigned or retrained, while others could retire.
The work of the centers will shift to centers in Denver and Albuquerque, N.M.
The Postal Service has targeted 264 facilities around the country for closure, but 41 won't be closed or consolidated right away pending additional reviews. The consolidations are expected to eliminate roughly 35,000 jobs.
