PUEBLO, COLO. -- The Pueblo County Coroner has identified the man who died in a house fire as 65-year-old Joseph Prutch.

Prutch died Thursday afternoon after not being able to make it out when his house caught fire.

According to officials with the Pueblo Fire Department, another woman was home at the time and was able to make it out of the house in the 100 block of Jackson Street unharmed.

Officials said the fire started around 12:17 p.m.

Fire crews were able to pull Prutch out during a rescue attempt, but he was pronounced dead on scene.

Neighbors said Prutch and the woman were friendly but kept to themselves, still they said they were saddened by the news.

"Devastated. Well I pulled up and I seen everything, and I mean, I definitely didn't think it was going to be as tragic as it was," Tyril Duggan, Prutch's neighbor, said.

Investigators with the Pueblo Police Department are working with fire crews to determine the cause of the fire, which they think started in the basement.

The woman will be displaced and is being helped by a victims assistance group.

There were three cats also believed to be inside the home at the time of the fire. One was found dead, the other two are still unaccounted for.

Neighbors said Thursday's tragic outcome has made them stop and appreciate life.

"I mean, like the saying is you always think it's somebody else 'till it hits home, and it's literally next door," Duggan said.
