COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- What was supposed to be a celebratory event at Venetucci Farm in Colorado Springs Tuesday morning turned when a few members of the 'Occupy Colorado Springs' group began chanting while Gov. John Hickenlooper was at the podium getting ready to speak.
Hickenlooper was at the farm for the groundbreaking of the city's first Community Solar Garden. The company rents out solar panels to customers to save energy.
Despite the fact the solar garden will create jobs and save money, two things occupy protesters across the country have been fighting for, the group didn't appear too thrilled with the Colorado governor's presence at the event.
Prior to the event the governor spoke about the importance of the right to assemble.
"They're college kids, idealists. They wanna hold Wall Street accountable, they wanna get corporate money out of controlling elections. Most of us agree with this right? So, we all believe in that," Hickenlooper said.
Protesters calmed down after a short rant while Hickenlooper stood at the podium but he did not attempt to talk over them.
The solar garden will house 2,500 panels on 2.5 acres of land. Customers of Colorado Springs Utilities can lease the panels to help reduce energy costs.
