COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Violent crimes happen almost every day in southern Colorado.

While Colorado Springs Police officers try to arrest those responsible, sometimes criminals flee the scene, and many are still on the run.

It's those cases that make up the Colorado Springs "Most Wanted" list.

"The people that are on that list have warrants for their arrest," Lt. Kirk Wison with the Colorado Springs Police Department said. "We also have mug shots for them and any law enforcement that may have come into contact with them.

Currently there are six people on the Most Wanted list: Leonel Hernandez, Jesus Aaron Perelta, Elias Cordova, Socorro Anselmo Gutierrez, Vinnicio Rafael Martinez and Augustine Montano. All are wanted on first degree murder charges, including two who committed their crime almost 15 years ago.

"Detectives are not actively working on those cases unless we get new information," Wilson said. "Even though it is years later, [the Most Wanted list] could solicit new information. Then we'd actively start working the case again, if we obtained more leads."

However, often times those leads run dry.

"When we're not able to find them, it's very frustrating for us," Colorado Springs Police Detective Luke Skifstad said.

Skifstad has been working the case of Cordova since November 2007. Cordova is wanted for attempted first degree murder of his girlfriend in 2007. There have been few leads in the case over the past five years, which Skifstad said could be because Cordova may have left the country.

"Mr. Cordova doesn't have citizenship in the U.S.," Skifstad said. "We are aware that he does have family ties in Mexico. However, we haven't found him in Mexico either."

Skifstad said criminals escaping across the border is a concern for law enforcement but not a reason for authorities to give up on their search.

"We obviously want to catch the bad guys," he said. "The family has an expectation so they can have a trial so they can have a certain amount of closure for their loss. And the community has a certain expectation of that, too."

Colorado Springs Police have their expectations, too. Just as the people on the list are wanted, law enforcement officials want information from the public.

"We believe the people locally will have the most information and will be able to provide us the most information," Wilson said.

Wilson said by providing a "Most Wanted" list to the public, CSPD can potentially develop new leads to find the suspects and put them behind bars.

"Having those people paying attention to where they are, what they're doing, what they're seeing," Skifstad said, "that's more eyes helping us that we don't have out there at any given time."

The complete "Most Wanted" list can be found on the City of Colorado Springs website, click here. There are multiple links available for citizens to submit anonymous tips and information regarding the various cases, as well as information about Crime Stoppers.
