TELLER COUNTY, COLO. -- Credit card fraud has hit Teller County with about 100 people filing reports of illegal activity, including the Sheriff and three of his deputies.

"I started watching my account 2-3 times a day, and there was a Facebook charge of $125 that I didn't put on there," Mike Ensminger, Teller County Sheriff, said.

Deputies don't know how the information is being stolen or where.

Sheriff deputies are not saying the location of the scams as not to deter people from shopping in the area.

Locals said it could be stemming from a location in Divide.

"[They] forwarded the email to all the parents and said to watch out, and it mentioned that it had happened in Divide," Teri Miller, a Teller County resident, said.

It's recommended that shoppers use cash to narrow their chances of becoming a victim.

You should also swipe your own cards, eliminating the possibility of a clerk using a handheld skimmer and collecting your information.

Some store owners in Woodland Park believe customers should also be aware of who has access to the store's register.

"We're a small business, and we have one machine," Paul Magnuson with Team Telecycle said.  "Unless somebody broke in and compromised it, there's no reason it should be compromised."

Before you stop shopping in Teller County, remember the local businesses count on your support.

A temporary change to your method of payment should keep you safe because cash doesn't carry any of your personal information.

Federal agents will be in Teller County starting Tuesday to try and shed some light as to how this credit card fraud is happening.
