COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Officials have confirmed the chemical found near a deceased male inside an apartment was sodium cyanide.
Police discovered the chemical Monday afternoon after finding a man's body in the apartment located in the 2400 Block of North Chestnut Street.
Several people, including one Colorado Springs Fire Department paramedic, were taken to the hospital for decontamination as a precaution.
Sodium cyanide is a chemical typically used for gold mining but has other uses as well.
It is extremely toxic and can be deadly depending on exposure.
More information is expected to be released Tuesday.
