PUEBLO, COLO. -- Pueblo Police officers have arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed a man during an altercation Sunday morning, causing the man to lose his stomach.

The victim, 35-year-old Jesus Gutierrez, was involved in a fight with a group of women at El Paisano's in the 2500 block of Lake Avenue in Pueblo earlier that night according to witnesses. Gutierrez's estranged wife was among those in the group when the fight moved outside.

Sgt. Eric Bravo said 22-year-old Shereen Nieves stabbed Gutierrez in the abdomen during a drive-by.

"According to the victim, the suspect was riding in a red-colored SUV, and she was hanging outside the passenger side when he was stabbed," Bravo said. "We are still looking for that SUV."

Gutierrez then ran to a friend's house in the 2300 block of Wyoming Avenue, but collapsed at the back door.

Medical personnel took him to Parkview Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

An officer found Gutierrez's stomach nearly two blocks from where he collapsed. The officer took it to the hospital, but surgeons were unable to reattach it.

Doctors said the victim can survive without his stomach, but he will face several side effects.

"Malnutrition is a big problem and severe weight loss," Dr. Andrea Kaiser, a general surgeon at Parkview Medical Center said. "However, you can live perhaps an almost normal life span without a stomach."

Police said Nieves admitted to the stabbing and is facing an attempted first degree murder charge as well as first degree assault.

The investigation is ongoing.
