FOUNTAIN, COLO. -- Fountain Police officers arrested 36-year-old Anthony Ribaudo Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a student while working as a teacher at Fountain-Fort Carson High School.
Ribaudo was a Dean of Students and the men's varsity basketball coach.
Ribaudo resigned from the school Monday.
In the arrest affidavit Ribaudo admits to police that he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl that started back in May.
Students had mixed reactions to the news.
"I do not believe that he would ever do something like that," Jaqueline Breckenridge, a student at Fountain-Fort Carson High School, said.
Breckenridge added that Ribaudo was always very friendly.
"He's a great Dean of Students. He likes to get to know the students, and he's very personable, and he likes to talk and walk around," Breckenridge said.
Other students said they weren't surprised by the news and had heard rumors from their friends that he had inappropriate relationships with students.
"I'm not surprised at all," Jahlil Davis, another student, said. "I mean he's a great guy, but he likes to get a little bit feely, a little bit sometimes, so I wasn't surprised when it happened."
According to the affidavit the victim's mother found sexual text messages on her daughter's phone. When she confronted her, she admitted that they were from Ribaudo and they were having a sexual relationship.
Police said the victim admitted to having sex with Ribaudo for the first time in May in the training room at the high school during a basketball tournament. She told police they had sex a second time at his brother's house about a week and a half later.
Police interviewed Ribaudo on June 15, and he admitted to having sex with the victim. He said their sexual relationship just "unfolded" after a long friendship.
The victim told police Ribaudo never forced her to have sex with him and said she knew what she was doing.
Police have charged Ribaudo with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. His bond is set at $10,000.
Sources said this isn't the first time Ribaudo has had a relationship with a student. They said his current wife is a former student of his.
Ribaudo told police that he believed he "opened himself up" to having sex with the victim because he was having relationship problems with his wife.
Ribaudo is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
