COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- It was another busy day for the Colorado Springs Fire Department as firefighters rescued a climber that fell approximately 15-20 feet from a rock at Garden of the Gods Park.
"If you don't have a permit or climbing equipment, you're not allowed to climb higher than 10 feet off the ground," Steven Dubay, Battalion Chief for the Colorado Springs Fire Department, said.
The 33-year-old male fractured his right lower leg and ankle, even though he had all the proper equipment and gear.
"CSFD annually gets between 15-20 rescues at Garden of the Gods Park and on average have two fatalities, so we take that very seriously," Dubay said.
Saturday's climbing rescue happened just one day after a 20-year-old woman fell to her death at Red Rocks Park. The woman who has not been identified fell approximately 100 feet. Her friends who witnessed the whole thing called 911. Crews initially called a medical helicopter to rescue the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both incidents are reminders that even if you play it safe, you have to be aware.
"They were doing all the things you are supposed to, it's just unfortunate one had a fall," Dubay said.
