COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- After a hit-and-run killed 19-year-old Fort Carson Spc. Christopher Wheeler Colorado Springs police put a call out to the public.
Wheeler, who's from Boston, died May 27 after a car pulled out in front of him and another soldier on a motorcycle. The police had been on the lookout for a green Dodge Neon with a decorative graphic on the side that fled the scene. Then, one week later a resident's tip led to an arrest.
"The person who gave us the information had seen the vehicle and was able to take a photo of the vehicle," Sgt. Adrian Vasquez with the Colorado Springs Police Department said.
Information from the tip was then sent to CSPD's Major Accident Unit who located the suspect and his car. Thirty-one-year-old Michael Wesley Conyer of Colorado Springs was arrested for the crash and charged with the hit-and-run, as well as various other traffic charges.
CSPD said they've had a lot of success in receiving tips. They put out a community warning about a possible carpet cleaning scam on May 27 and have received numerous phone calls.
"We got a lot of information on them and on other people that are out there acting a little strange," Vasquez said.
While there's still no identification or arrest on the possible scammers, police credit Friday's arrest in the hit-and-run crash the community for keeping an eye out.
