FLORENCE, COLO. -- Child abuse is a growing problem across the entire state, and one group of students is hoping to bring attention to the problem.

Fremont County had more than 240 documented cases of mental and phsical child abuse in 2010. These statistics were shocking to the students in Denise Albertson's 8th grade reading class at Fremont Middle School. The class collectively decided to bring attention to the issue by planting pinwheels in a garden to represent the cases of child abuse.

The idea came from a prgram called "Pinwheels for Prevention." The 16 students did all the work and fundraising by themselves.

Albertson is very proud of the students. She has her classes read the book, "A Child called It," which is where the discussion of child abuse came to light.

Some students have close ties to child abuse. This makes the project even more impactful, and they hope to make a big difference around the community.
