PENROSE, COLO. -- Deputies are investigating a shooting that left one person dead at a trailer park in Penrose, Colo., about 12 miles east of Canon City.
The shooting happened Monday morning around 9 a.m. in the 500 block of I Street off Highway 115.
Deputies said when they arrived they found 30-year-old August Michael Kaleta Jr. with several gun shot wounds. Officials said he later died at the scene.
"We interviewed several individuals. One subject was taken into custody for further questioning and is currently in the Fremont County Jail," Capt. Don Pinover with the Fremont County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies said while Penrose has problems like any other city, shootings there are rather unusual, and homicides even more so.
"Nothing goes on here, it's Penrose," Tiffany, a neighbor, said. "It's terrifying, you know I've got my little girl here, and I moved down here because stuff like this doesn't happen."
Deputies said the victim and the 23-year-old suspect did know each other but are trying to figure out what led up to the shooting.
"That's what we're trying to find out, what the connection is between all the people who were on scene and the victim and the suspect," Pinover said.
While deputies work to piece together exactly what happened, neighbors look for answers on their own.
"Nobody will tell us much of anything, I've got most of my information from my neighbors and the landlord," Tiffany said.
Tiffany added she is considering moving now because of the shooting.
"The worst part about it is just knowing you're not safe no matter where you go," she said.
Deputies said there were several shots fired, and a couple of bullet holes were even found in a trailer next door.
No one else was injured and the investigation is ongoing.
