DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado House has given final approval to a plan aimed at reducing next year's school cuts by $90 million.

The proposal unanimously passed Monday. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Education funding is typically where Colorado lawmakers look first to make reductions during tough times because it's a big portion of the budget.

But lawmakers say easing some of the cuts this year is possible because state tax revenues are estimated to be higher than expected.

House Bill 1277 would restore $22.5 million to schools next year by transferring surplus money from the state's education fund, a sort of savings account funded by income taxes. The second part of the plan would safeguard $67.5 million to prevent future cuts.
