COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Coughing, sneezing, and dry eyes are all associated with allergies, and a lot of southern Colorado residents are feeling the effects of a strong allergy season.

Dr. Robert Nathan is with the Asthma and Allery Associates in Colorado Springs. He said the recent dry and windy weather has allowed for the pollen and dust to be more prevalent in the air, making allergies even worse. He said there has not been enough cold to blunt the tree pollen, making it extremely prevalent.

Tree pollen has been high since late February and only continues to get worse. Grass pollen has shown up unusually early.

Typical allergy season begins in March and can last all the way through the fall. In March, there was a sharp increase in tree pollen with some of the highest levels seen in years. As the summer approaches, grass pollen typically increases. By fall, weed pollen kicks in.

Nathan advises anyone with allergies to seek medical help to ease the symptoms. With more dry weather and inevitable winds on the way, the pollen will likely not decrease anytime soon. In fact, Nathan worries that pollen will remain high through the first frost of the fall.

You can contact the Asthma and Allergy Associates at (719) 473-0872.
