Carson formally announces new brigade unit

FORT CARSON, COLO. (AP) -- Fort Carson is formally announcing the activation of a new Army combat aviation brigade at the post outside Colorado Springs.

The 13th Combat Aviation Brigade will have up to 2,700 soldiers and 113 helicopters, bringing the population of soldiers based at Fort Carson to nearly 30,000.

The formal announcement is scheduled for Wednesday. Colorado Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet and Rep. Doug Lamborn disclosed the move on Monday.

Udall says the Army will contract for about $224 million in construction for the brigade.

Another new helicopter unit, the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, will be made up of soldiers and aircraft now spread among other units. It will be established at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
