LIMON, COLO. -- Authorities said a 27-year-old police officer has been shot to death, and a suspected fugitive has killed himself during a standoff in Limon Wednesday night.
The incident began just after 6 p.m. at the Wagon Wheel Trailer Park.
Officials said police officer Jay Sheridan was shot by 52-year-old Dennis Mark Hasty as officers attempted to serve him with a fugitive warrant. Sheridan has been with the department for six years.
Hasty then barricaded himself inside the trailer.
After a standoff that lasted several hours, police said teams entered the residence around 11 p.m. to find Hasty dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The U.S. Marshals Service District of Colorado, with the help of the Knoxville office of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force in the Eastern District of Tennessee, developed information that fugitive Hasty may be in the area of Limon. Hasty was being sought on a Roane County, Tenn. warrant for a sex offender registry violation.
The U.S. Marshals alerted authorities from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office late Wednesday afternoon, which coordinated with the Limon Police Department in an attempt to locate him.
Hasty was eventually discovered dead.
“The U.S. Marshals Service is deeply saddened at the tragic loss of Officer Jay Sheridan of the Limon Police Department,” U.S. Marshal John Kammerzell said in a statement. “The Marshals Service stands together with our fellow law enforcement partners during this time of mourning. Both I and my staff have met with and are in close communication with Chief Lynn Yowell and other county and state agencies involved in this situation.”
Up to 20 nearby residents were evacuated during the standoff.
Sheridan leaves behind a wife and a 21-month-old daughter, according to Law Enforcement Today officials. He is also survived by his parents, brother and sister.
Thirteen law enforcement agencies assisted Limon police in the investigation.
“Jay was an outstanding officer and will be greatly missed by his fellow officers and colleagues” Limon Police Chief Lynn Yowell said in a statement
Law Enforcement Today gave a statement on its Facebook page about Sheridan's death.
