COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Fire crews responded to a brush fire on the west side of Colorado Springs early Monday morning.

Authorities said they were flooded with phones calls about several acres burning in an area southwest of Highway 24 and 21st Street.

Witnesses reported the flames reached as high as 8-10 feet.

Crews said at no time were any homes threatened, but it took 26 firefighters from nine different units to battle the flames that moved quickly due to high winds.

"We have winds being reported at 50-60 miles per hour," Lt. Kriss Soppe with the Colorado Springs Fire Department said.

Firefighters fought to gain control throughout the morning using a water and foam solution that better penetrates and holds the dampness.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
