Local marine dies in Afghanistan

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A marine from Colorado Springs died in Afghanistan Friday, according to the Department of Defense (DOD).

The DOD said 28-year-old Sgt. Jason T. Smith died Friday while conducting conbat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Branch, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Marine Corps Bases Japan, Iwakuni, Japan.

Smith started active duty in the marines in June of 2000. His awards include the Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Smith was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. A memorial service is scheduled for Nov. 30 at the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Marine Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. to honor him.
