COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A helicopter crashed on Pikes Peak about one mile from the summit around 7:30 a.m. Friday, injuring four people.

The pilot was in critical condition and was transported by Memorial Star helicopter to Memorial Hospital, but has since been released. The other three were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The helicopter was filming the "driverless car" tests for VW/Audi.

The Cascade Fire Department and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office responded.

The Pikes Peak rangers said the Pikes Peak Highway will be open Friday to Crystal Reservoir, but will be closed beyond that until further notice. The Cog railway is running limited service as well..

The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.

The driverless car is just what it sounds like - a car without a driver. The Center for Automotive Research at Stanford University developed the car with the goal of racing it in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The car is named "Shelly" after Michele Mouton, the first woman to win the race. The team will attempt to race the car at speeds of 130 mph. The car, using an advanced GPS system, knows exactly where it is on the road and can accomodate for curves and bends.

The team has partnered with Volkswagen Automotive.
