NEW YORK (AP) -- A law enforcement official says a man suspected of trying to detonate a car bomb in Times Square over the weekend did a dry run three days earlier.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the investigation.

The official says Faisal Shahzad (FY'-sul shah-ZAHD') drove an SUV to Times Square from Connecticut on April 28 and returned to the scene April 30 to drop off a different vehicle. The official says he then went back the next day to leave the SUV with the car bomb but forgot the keys for both vehicles in the SUV and had to take public transit to get away.

Shahzad was arrested on terrorism and weapons of mass destruction charges Monday night. A cousin of Shahzad's father has called the arrest "a conspiracy."
