COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- At Grace Best Elementary Tuesday students worked at their computers.
Their task: design the playground they want to see at their new school.
"I want a tire swing, and slides, I like slides that go up and down and are curvy," fifth grader Jackson said.
"Yeah, tire swings and a big slide," fifth grader Riley said.
"To have a soccer field and maybe a big basketball court," fifth grader Mikayla said.
The playground project the students were working on is part of an overall effort by Grace Best's staff and the district to get students involved in the school's transition to Creekside Middle School.
Officials said the students are also getting to vote on Creekside's new name.
"All of the children that wanted to were able to contribute a name for the new school, and there are two possibilities and one will be decided on later this week," kindergarten paraprofessional Paula Stwertnik said.
One of the options is Bear Creek, a combination of Creekside and Grace Best's logo, the bears.
Teachers said they want Grace students to feel like they are a part of their new building, and added they also want to boost school spirit.
"We are really trying to keep a positive note on our transition, and we are hoping that when our community sees how involved the children are, then it will inspire them to get involved and help us out with future projects," Stwertnik said.
Stwertnik said the school wants their playground and name to be special. She said it is not just about Grace students, but the community as a whole.
"We are just hoping it can be something everyone can enjoy," Stwertnik said.
