COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Two students at Palmer High School in Colorado Springs recently won third place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Las Vegas, Nev., earlier this month.
Sophomores Laura Gudvangena and Tonya Pavlenka did a project entitled "Melanoma: Triggering an Immune Response Using Toll Ligends."
Their research consisted of finding a way for the human's immune system to help fight the rapid spread of melanoma.
The research has so far been confined to mice, but Gudvangen and Pavlenka hope to continue their research with additional funding.
They add that it is not necessarily a cure for cancer, but a way for the body to naturally fight the cancerous cells and possibly eliminated or decreasing the usage of more invasive treatments.
