COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- It's the biggest show on television. It's taken over the music industry and creates superstars from every day people. This massive pop-culture phenomenon has some very close ties to southern Colorado.

"I have to tell you that working with this young man has always been a brush of greatness. I knew that he was going to be doing something special. I never dreamed it would be in this line," believes Paula Baack.

The choral director at Air Academy High School, she has also taught American Idol finalist Scott MacIntyre in music and voice since he was 16, and cherishes the relationship they share.

"I've known him for seven years and I jumped at the opportunity," says Baack.

Baack's new students love her support and influence, bringing out the best with those she works with.

"Yeah, she's awesome -- she's a keeper," the students cheer.

The proud music coach continues keeping close ties with MacIntyre, including during his Idol adventure.

"He called me when he made Hollywood week and I told Scott, I said if everything else just stops right now, this has just been a great ride for you," she said.

To keep that ride going, Baack looks for anyone and everyone to help the cause.

"Yeah, she always tells us to vote for him, oh, I don't know if i should say that," jokes a student.

"I do. I strongly encourage it," continues Baack.

With such a close personal connection, watching American Idol makes her more nervous for MacIntyre's success every week.

"I wrote to his mom one day. I said I'm crying one moment, cheering the next moment. It's a bit surreal and it's just a thrill to see him up on the screen," Baack says with a smile.
