In four years has prevented 120 teen suicides and 28 planned school attacks

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- High school can be one of the most difficult times in a person's life.

Which is why Safe 2 Tell was organized four years ago as an outreach for students who find themselves in difficult, and sometimes, life-threatening situations.

Safe 2 Tell is a nonprofit Student Crime Prevention Program based on the Colorado Prevention Initiative for School Safety.

It is funded by the Colorado Trust, and uses the public's information to stop tragedies before they happen in Colorado schools. Anyone who provides information is guaranteed anonymity by law, allowing people to feel safe when coming forward.

When Safe 2 Tell was offered to Mitchell High School, staff members and students jumped at the opportunity.

"When I learned about it I thought it was really cool and a good thing for students to know about," Senior Karleen Mays said.

"We talk about bullying, alcohol, reckless driving and things like that," Senior Michael Johnson said.

Johnson and Mays make regular presentations on behalf of Safe 2 Tell. They participated in an educational video Mitchell made to tell students about the program.

"You can make a difference, whether it is a threat to a life or a threat someone is making to their own life. That information alone getting in the hands of someone who can make a difference in a student's life," Susan Payne said.

Payne founded Safe 2 Tell after the Columbine High School tragedy in 1999. She said student involvement is key to the program's success.

"We know that 81 percent of the time, in each one of the tragedies, someone knew that it was going to happen in advance and did not report the information that they had," Payne said. "If that information had been reported, the tragedy could have been stopped in the first place."

She said Safe 2 Tell has already prevented 28 planned school attacks, including one in Canada, and 120 teen suicides.

"Be aware, know your friends and what is going on, and if you really care about them you will keep them safe," Johnson said.

Safe 2 Tell will host a special presentation by G.H. Phipps tomorrow night, December 18, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at G.H. Phipps located at 496 Nevada Mesa View.

Please RSVP to Joe McGuire at 719-520-7435 if you plan to attend.
