NEWTON, MASS. -- Colorado Springs has been named the third best destination city on the rise in the U.S. by TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site.

TripAdvisor gave Colorado Springs the prestigious ranking based on positive traveler feedback and traveler interest from one year to the next.

The city is home to the United States Olympic Training Center, The Air Force Academy, the famous Garden of the Gods Park and the scenic Rocky Mountain Front Range just to the west.

The boost leaves Colorado Springs sitting behind only Austin, Texas and Memphis, Tenn. Denver was number five on the list, making Colorado the only state with two cities in the top five. Portland, Maine is number four.

Numbers 6-10 were Portland, Ore., Fort Myers, Fla., Phoenix, Dallas and Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Mar del Plata, Argentina was the top destination city on the rise worldwide.

"These rising hotspots around the world are increasingly gaining the attention and admiration of travelers on TripAdvisor," Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, said in a statement. "For those looking to be inspired for vacation planning for 2013, these destinations offer remarkable places to eat, stay and play."

TripAdvisor also released the top overall destination cities in the U.S. New York remained number one, followed by San Francisco, Chicago, Las Vegas and Honolulu.

London was number one worldwide in that category.
