COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Christmas is three weeks away and if you are looking for a seasonal job to supplement your income through the new year, you might have a hard time finding one.

Experts said the down economy has made for a tough job market, but they add with the right resume and attitude it is possible to find a temporary job.

"We generally do see more people coming out and looking for supplemental work during the holidays, and one thing that is making that challenge harder is there are more and more people looking for work in general, and are willing to take whatever job they can find right now," said Toni Fleming, business development manager with Manpower Professional.

Fleming said the good news is there are more seasonal jobs right now because many companies are only looking to hire temporary workers. She said with the economic outlook being what it is, it is hard for businesses to commit long-term.

"In addition, more and more companies have laid off their full-time employees so they are looking for consultants or contractors to complete specific projects or to do work to get them through a crunch," Fleming said.

Fleming said using a company like Manpower can help in the job search. She said it is best to send out as many applications as possible.

Officials with the Pikes Peak Workforce Center agreed and added it is also important to tailor your resume to the seasonal job you are looking for.

"When the job itself is terminal or short term in nature, you want to customize your resume that you would usually use for full-time work to be sure to especially target it to the needs of that particular job, and that may mean leaving some things out of the resume," said Dana Rodenbaugh, vice president of the Pikes Peak Workforce Center.

Rodenbaugh said if you are looking for full-time work it does not hurt to apply for a part-time job because you never know, it could turn into a full-time position. He said if you are in high school or college and are looking for a seasonal job do not give up because you do have specific qualities employers may be looking for.

"For example if you can work overnight or third shift that eliminates a lot of the competition from people who simply can not consider that," Rodenbaugh said.
