Mayor Bach sat down to discuss an array of topics ranging from the Colorado Springs 2013 budget to the newly established paid student internship program.

But the Mayor spent some time addressing the Colorado Springs Independent article, 'Misfire: How city leadership left residents - and their heroes - exposed during the Waldo Canyon tragedy. The article by Pam Zubeck painted a picture of ill-prepared city leaders during Colorado's biggest blaze. Zubeck used first hand accounts of firefighters and witnesses to challenge decisions made by the city and its employees.

"In talking to some of the firefighters who were interviewed, they told me that that reporter took out of context what they said, or even twisted what they said," says Bach. "So very disappointing, but I'll say this, we are gonna be completing an internal review of the Waldo Canyon Fire here within the next 60 days. Separately we understand the County Sheriff is completing a similar review for the County's participation of the fire. As soon as I get those 2 reports along with city council, we'll look at those and we'll come to a judgment on what to do from there."

Fox 21 reached out to Zubeck. She replied :

"First, the residents of Colorado Springs should be pleased that Mayor Bach hasn't ruled out a third-party review of what happened during the Waldo Canyon Fire. Such a review undoubtedly would shed light on the event, and help the city prepare for emergency situations in the future.

Second, if he thinks that "Misfire," published Dec. 12, was a rush to judgment, he should be reminded that we spent almost six months working on this story, which was largely based on reports from the city's own firefighters. And that we gave him and Fire Chief Rich Brown a week to respond to questions before they refused.

Our goal isn't to generate controversy; it's to provide a full understanding of what happened from June 23 through June 26, most notably during the evacuation of Mountain Shadows, during which two people died."
