COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Southern Colorado students and their families affected by the Waldo Canyon Fire are getting a helping hand from our neighbors up north.

Friday, a huge donation of school supplies was delivered to Christmas Unlimited in Colorado Springs.

The supplies were collected by employees, families and students in the Denver Public School District.

The items will be given to local kids and teens who were affected by the June wildfire.

Along with helping families out during the holidays, Christmas Unlimited also has a back to school drive every year.

DPS' donation will allow the non-profit to extend their reach.

"We were hoping for a donation of this type to help families that we typically would not be serving this time of year," Bob Tretheway, Executive Director of Christmas Unlimited, said. "Again because of the Waldo Canyon Fire."

The supplies with go to help families in Cripple Creek, Woodland Park and Manitou Springs who were without work during the wildfire.

"We are reaching out to several organizations in those communities to distribute the school supplies," Tretheway said.

As for the students in Colorado Springs School District 11 whose homes were lost, Tretheway said not to worry as another group is taking care of their back to school needs.

"We are able to provide about 70 percent of what the child needs for that first day of school," Tretheway said.

An exciting accomplishment for Christmas Unlimited who is ready and willing to help out our friends up north when and if the time comes.

"I think this partnership with Denver Public School is extraordinary, and greatly appreciated," he said.
