Springs Fabrication has signed the largest contract in its history - $8.1 million - to provide filters that absorb hazardous waste at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot.
The company will be hiring as the project gets under way next month, said President Tom Neppl.
"This contract will absorb our existing staff, so we'll have to ramp up a bit," he said. "That's why it's good news - not just for us, but for Southern Colorado. These big contract s don't always keep the money in the area, but this time it will stay here."
The Bechtel Pueblo Team is the systems contractor for the project and was selected in 2002 to design, build, operate and close the chemical depot. Springs Fabrication has worked with Bechtel Corp. during the past 15 years.
The company has created biological filters for other industries, including the beverage industry. This is the first time it's used the machines to clean up chemicals, though it has built chemical filters to clean up mustard gas in other military facilities.
The project, which will cost $3.5 billion, is expected to last 10 years. Springs Fabrication will be involved during the next eight to 10 months.
