Veteran owned brewery makes it their mission to serve and hire vets

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Veteran's day has come and gone, but one local brewery is celebrating every day of the year.

Red Leg Brewing Company in Colorado Springs is not only owned by a veteran, but he's making it his mission to hire vets too.

"Red Leg is a slang term in the army world for an artillery man," said Todd Baldwin, president and founder of Red Leg Brewing Co. "Back in the civil war they used to wear red stripes down their pant leg to denote their location on the field of battle."

Baldwin is an Iraq veteran who retired from the army in 2009.

"I struggled greatly when I got out and I was like you know what one day I'm just going to do what I love," Baldwin said.

That love is for hops and suds.

"I was like, 'Man, you know there's not a whole lot of veteran owned breweries out there in the country' so about 2010 and 2011 I started putting the plans together for Red Leg," Baldwin said.

The rest is history.

"We went literally from making 30 gallons of beer a day, about 200 gallons a week, now we make anywhere between three and five thousand gallons every single week," Baldwin said.

Red Leg is about much more than just brewing great beer.

"I think it's important for our community especially in Colorado Springs," Baldwin said. "There are so many veterans here and there's so many active duty and every single month there's 500 veterans getting out of just Fort Carson alone and they have great skills and they can be great partners in our community."

Out of eight employees at Red Leg, three are vets and he's looking to hire two more next year.

"So it's really on us now as business owners and as leaders in our community to say 'hey we want you here. We want you to be a part of our community not just for the short term but for the long haul," Baldwin said.

Red Leg brews can be found in more than 150 restaurants and liquor stores across the Pikes Peak region and their taproom is open seven days a week.
