Alcohol blamed for fatal hit-and-run crash in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A Colorado Springs man was driving under the influence when he caused a crash that killed another driver Thursday night, according to police.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and Drennan Road. Police said a pickup truck unsafely turned left in front of an SUV that was headed south on Academy. The two vehicles crashed, causing the SUV to roll over.

Police said the pickup sustained major front end damage, but was still able to leave the scene. Officers found the truck at a home on Fernwood Drive, about two miles away. They arrested the driver, 48-year-old Augustin Casteneda Perez of Colorado Springs.

Both people in the SUV were hospitalized. The driver died of his injuries Friday morning, according to police. His name has not been released.

Police said this is the 30th traffic-related death in Colorado Springs this year. In 2015, there were a total of 29 traffic-related deaths.
