The government took the first step Monday in expanding the AmeriCorps program, awarding grants to nonprofits and other organizations to put 57,000 AmeriCorps members to work in communities around the country.

Colorado submitted its application for the Obama administration's "Race to the Top" program on Tuesday, the competition's deadline. Gov. Bill Ritter says Colorado has an edge over other states because lawmakers from both parties and education groups like the teachers' union support the effort.
