Authorities say Daniel Michelotti of Spring Grove, Ill., died Wednesday in the slide near U.S. 6, about a mile from Arapahoe Basin ski area. Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson said Michelotti worked at Breckenridge Ski Resort and had been living in Colorado since November.

Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson said the slide happened at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, about a mile west of Arapahoe Basin ski area. Two other snowboarders who were behind and above the man survived the avalanche.

The Summit County coroner says 46-year-old Christopher Harrison of Durham, N.C., was riding a chairlift alone Monday at Copper Mountain Resort when his head fell forward in the chair. The lift operator stopped the lift, and ski patrol cared for Harrison until an ambulance arrived.

The U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday it will cut trees on an additional 1,100 acres of White River National Forest in northern Summit County. Last month the Forest Service said another 4,000 acres would be cleared.

The Summit County Rescue group says he was speed gliding, a sport that's popular in Europe and is also known as speed flying or ski gliding. It involves skiing using a foot-launched parachute which, depending on the wind and conditions, can lift the skier off the ground intermittently.
