As one of America's great scientists and inventors, George Washington Carver was dedicated to improving the economy of the south following the civil war, particularly the position of African Americans. Carver's research into soil improvement and the diversification of crops gave poor farmers a viable alternative to cotton. He's perhaps best known for discovering hundreds of uses for the peanut, sweet potato and soybean, not only stimulating the economy of these crops, but bringing hope to the people who farmed them.
