As creator of the three-way traffic signal, we use this African-American inventor's work everyday while driving in our cars. But Garrett Morgan's ingenuity was put to heroic use back in 1916 when he created an early version of the gas mask and used it to rescue 32 workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel beneath Lake Erie.
