There are so many different ways you can raise your children. And who is to say which way is best? For me and my wife, we are subscribing to the "World Experience" method. This means we are bursting the proverbial protective bubble.
This means we are letting him check the world out on his own, within reason of course. We are exposing him to all sorts of things. Ranging from pop culture, to food, to art, to nature. We want him to be able to decide what he likes and doesn't like. Right now, he is on track to becoming a quarterback, a heavy equipment operator, a "Dancing With the Stars" champion, a literary critic, or a zoologist. And that is just this week.
We have taught him that if you fall down, you need to pick yourself up and keep going. We aren't around him every single second of every single day. We figure that in life, you are going to fall down a lot, so you need to learn how to adapt and grow from it.
This is opposed to another method: smothering.
This may work for some, but what message is it sending? Children need the chance to learn independence, creativity, problem solving, and self reliance. Now I am not saying parents should just plop their kid down and say 'okay have at it'. But you can find a happy medium. Besides, who likes to be told what to do every single moment of every single day? Even at 3 years old?
I say get a pin, and burst that bubble!
