Man arrested in overnight Widefield shooting

EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man in connected with an early morning shooting in the Widefield area.

According to the Sheriff's Office, 31-year-old Ian Whittaker of Widefield, was arrested on the charge of Second Degree Assault, Prohibited Use of a Weapon and Reckless Endangerment.

Just before 2 a.m., Tuesday, authorities responded to a home in the 7100 block of Tilden Street in the Widefield area on the report of someone being shot.

Deputies arrived at the home to find 33-year-old Leonard James had suffered a single gunshot wound to his back. Police said he was awake and spoke briefly with them before being transported to a local hospital.

James was last listed in serious but stable condition.

Police investigation and interviews of people at the home revealed there had been a gathering at the home when James was shot. The investigation led to the arrest of Whittaker.

Alcohol and marijuana appear to have been factors in this shooting, police said.
