COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- School District 11 proposed an 'Optimization of Utilization' plan that would focus on four comprehensive high schools in the District. Wasson, the 5th school, would be repurposed in the plan, forcing current students 9-11 to integrate to other schools.
On Monday, Wasson alumni and current students spoke at a press conference inside the highschool. For the most part, they feel it would be a negative impact on the community and students if Wasson were to be shut down.
Hall of Fame pitcher and Wasson alumni Goose Gossage was on hand. He spent time talking with current students after the press conference.
"One of the boys had told me he's going to college," said Gossage. "He's gonna be a college student after he (graduates). He said if it weren't for Wasson, he'd probably be in jail. And I hear these stories a lot. These kids are the future."
FOX 21 News reached out to District 11 for an interview. A spokesperson referred us to their website, www.d11.org/utilization. On the site you can read the 40 page 'Optimization of Utilization' plan. There's also a verbatim Q&A from the January 10 meeting. The next vote on the future of Wasson High is scheduled for February 6.
