COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Wednesday was an emotional day at Memorial Hospital as a Colorado man came face-to-face with the couple who saved his life.
A week ago, 24-year-old Blakelee Garrett was doing construction work on a home in rural Limon when his angle grinder kicked up a piece of metal into his leg.
Blakelee said when he stood up to see what had happened, he felt a lot of blood.
He said he then ran to his truck to call for help, but could not see the buttons on his cell phone.
After that, all he remembers is stumbling up to the doorstep, where he collapsed.
"I turned off the grinder and stood up, not really knowing what to expect, and I knew as soon as I stood up I was in trouble because it felt like a gallon of blood fell out right away," Garrett said.
Garrett said his first thought was to call his co-worker who was running an errand, but when he could not see the buttons on his cell phone because of the blood loss, he stumbled up to Kip and Paula Parker's home to ask for help.
"I got up to the door and could see the doorbell and tried to reach for it a couple times, and I missed it every time," Garrett said.
Paula said she happened to see Blakelee walking up and became worried when he disappeared.
She said she called to her husband to go check on him, and he found Blakelee bleeding right outside their front door.
"We began to apply pressure, then within a few minutes we applied a tourniquet," Kip said.
Garrett was flown to Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery.
Doctors said when Blakelee arrived, his blood levels and body temperature were so low they were amazed he survived.
"He would have bled to death had they been one minute further away, or had they hesitated in any way, shape or form," Memorial Trauma Surgeon Tiffany Willard said.
Remarkably, Paula and Kip do not have any formal first aid training.
Instead, they are attributing their actions to quick thinking and parental instincts.
"If anything had went just a little bit different, if they had not wondered what I was doing up on the deck, or came to check on me, if anything had happened differently, I would not be standing here today," Garrett said.
Blakelee's co-worker also helped the Parkers save his friend's life.
