PUEBLO, COLO. -- Some residents of Pueblo are being threatened over the phone, according to police.

Someone calls and informs the person they have warrants and are looking at jail time if they do not pay their fines, police said. The phone calls documented by police show that the attempts are for $2,500.

Police said the suspect calls have been from (818) and (760) area codes. The caller is described as being a man with a Middle Eastern accent who threatens people and is forceful about getting payment.

According to the Pueblo Police Department, most law enforcement agencies will not ask for payments over the phone but instead will ask the person to report to the agency to clear the warrant.

Currently, the Pueblo Police Department is having its volunteers contact people with outstanding municipal warrants. Those volunteers, according to police, will never ask for payment.
