COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- No charges will be assessed against the mother of a newborn who said she found the baby in a dumpster earlier this week.

The call to the Colorado Springs Police Department came in early Wednesday afternoon. At that time, police were told the baby girl was found in or near a dumpster at Rosemont at Shadow Mountain apartments.

Further investigation revealed that the 17 year old who said she found the baby was actually the infants mother. The teen was able to hide her pregnancy from her family, and gave birth to the girl at home on Wednesday.

The newborn was never in the dumpster, and was not hurt. DHS is now involved with the baby and services are being provided to the 17 year old mother.

A statement from the police department says "CSPD and the District Attorney's Office have consulted with DHS.

After careful consideration and deliberation, CSPD and the District Attorney's Office have decided that the situation is most appropriately handled in the juvenile/civil court system and not in the criminal courts.  Based on that, no criminal charges will be filed at this time."
