COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs will be offering two free metered parking spots in the downtown area every day starting this week.

The city has about 2,400 metered spots downtown, all of which cost money during regular business hours and on Saturdays. However, two of those 2,400 will be free every day from now on.

The city will choose two random spots beginning at 9 a.m. each day and mark them as free.

"The idea is basically that you might just walk up to a meter, get ready to pay, and find out it's free that day," City Manager of Administrative Services Nick Kittle said. "So if you're the lucky one you're gonna get free parking."

Kittle said the goal is to get more people to come downtown.

"We want people in our downtown. It's the heart and core of Colorado Springs," Kittle said. "We want people to come down here and have an unique experience. We have unique restaurants and shops. We really want to encourage people to spend their time and money, just enjoying the downtown of our community."

The spots are on a first-come, first serve basis and don't have a time limit.

"I think it's a great idea. They're having, I think, a little bit of trouble trying to attract attention to the downtown area," resident Dan Marvin said. "I certainly like to see whatever efforts can be applied to bring people downtown."

"I think that the free meters concept ends up creating a really good opportunity to have fun," Kittle said. "We wanna make parking, as much as parking can be a fun thing, we want this to be a fun thing."
