EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- The Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (PPRTA) is asking voters to approve a regular tax increase to help fund road construction.

Those in favor of the issue say without the money, they don't know where road construction funding will come from. However, those against it say that money won't go toward construction, which is what's needed to correct congestion issues.

"It'll reduce congestion, it'll make things safer at intersections, it'll be more clear how to get from one place to another," county engineer Andre Brackin said.

Brackin said citizens have submitted 137 road construction concerns, and the tax will fund construction improvement in those areas.

"This program has probably been the most successful program for getting roads rehabilitated or fixed or traffic problems dealt with than any other program I know of in the region," he said. "All of these have been brought to us by members of the general public at various times over the last several years."

The tax is a .5 cent increase per dollar on a sales and use tax that was passed in 2005. It is currently set to expire in 2014, but if it passes, the tax will be extended until 2024.

It will be issue 5A on your ballot.
