COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- It might seem a bit odd to go online to meet someone who lives next door.
But in today's day and age, where social media is king, communities are going outside the box to stay connected.
Local volunteers who work with wildfire mitigation are using the site to notify homeowners about chipping programs and foregoing the daunting task of going door-to-door.
"The folks that participated this year participated vigorously. They had a lot of motivation from the TV and some even had so much trash they couldn't park in their driveways," Gabriel Caunt, wildfire mitigation volunteer, said.
The website is called Nextdoor.com, and it allows homeowners log in and talk about needs of the community.
It was a big help the day after the Waldo Canyon Fire hit as neighbors chipped in to help Care and Share collect fire necessities.
"During our weekly concert series that took place that next night they raised $721 and brought over 400 energy bars that went to firefighters on the line the next day," Brandon Helm, of Nextdoor Wolf Ranch said.
But now that life is back to normal, Wolf Ranch is using the website to enjoy the long days of summer with a bbq. Giving this 900 plus community some fun in the sun with a click of the mouse.
