COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs commuters are going to be driving through a construction site as the Colorado Department of Transportation build three new bridges over Powers Boulevard: at Briargate Parkway, Union Boulevard and Pinecreek.

"They need to do something about it because there are a lot of accidents, whether it's a bridge or something," Ricardo Figueroa, a Colorado Springs driver, said.

The construction, which starts April 30, is meant to alleviate the large number of severe accidents and traffic.

The three new bridges will look similar to the Powers at Woodmen Road interchange, but will cost less than half the price.

Three construction crews, totaling at least 30 people, will be working simultaneously.

CDOT is expecting the project to cost $11.1 million and to take only 120 calendar days to finish.

"You have weather delays so be it, it is actually is counting towards that 120 days. So, seven days a week, 365 is actually counting regardless if they are working or not," Yun Han, Project Manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said.

If the project runs over, contractor Edward Kraemer & Sons Inc. will have to pay liquidated damages for each day they're late.
