COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs is losing ground when it comes to being one of the safest cities to drive it, according to Allstate's latest Best Drivers Report.

The report ranks America's 200 largest cities based on their number of collisions reported.

This year Colorado Springs came in at number 11, seven spots lower than it's 2010 position at number four.

While the drop may not be good news, Allstate agency owner and agent Tamie Farris said it's not terrible to be at number 11, and with a little work Colorado Springs drivers could bounce back next year.

"We rank better than Denver or Aurora and better than a lot of the cities out there," Farris said.

According to the report drivers in Colorado Springs are 16.1 percent less likely to get into an crash than the national average, and the average driver in Colorado Springs will get into a collision every 11.9 years.

That number is more than half a year more likely then last year when the city ranked fourth.

Farris said the statistics don't take into account why, but she has a few ideas.

"The reasons that we have found to be most prominent is number one distractions while you're driving, main reason for that is cell phones," Farris said.

Farris said cell phones aren't the only culprit when it comes to distracting drivers.

"Eating while your driving, putting on your makeup while you're driving, playing with the radio or the CD changer while you're driving, anything that distracts you from paying attention to the road," Farris said.

John Zortman, who drives 2,000 miles a week, said he sees distracted drivers all the time.

"A lot of texting, you see that going on. The morning drivers you see eating breakfast, and putting on makeup and brushing their teeth, and shaving their face, the whole nine yards," Zortman said.

Farris said the second biggest contributor to collisions is bad road conditions.

"You know not taking into account that it's foggy, that it's rainy, you get this black ice on the road and sometimes you can't tell," Farris said.

She added following too closely and road rage follow close behind.

Colorado Springs resident Thomas Dickerson said he sees road rage quite a bit in Colorado Springs.

"They get too aggressive with tailgating really, really close, changing lanes when it's not safe to do so," Dickerson said.

He suggested when things get heated behind the wheel to take a break.

"Might just be a good idea to take five minutes and pull off in a parking lot and just relax for a minute with a good song," Dickerson said.

Zortman said he's not afraid to report distracted or angry drivers.

"If they're really obnoxious, and they're gonna be hurting somebody or a threat to the other drivers, then I think it's my place as a citizen to do my part to keep the road safe," Zortman said.

Farris said number 11 is pretty good out of 200, but Colorado Springs drivers could do better.

"They should say am 'I contributing to the problem? Do I use my cell phone while driving? Do I fail to take into consideration the road conditions? Do I tailgate?'" she said.

Fort Collins ranked number one for the second year in a row.

Denver came in at 51, and Aurora at 60.

Phoenix topped the list for the safest city with a population of more than one million people.
