COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Three families have been displaced from their homes after a fire damaged part of an apartment complex in Colorado Springs Sunday.

It started just before noon at the West Meadow Peak Apartments located near South Academy Boulevard and Westmeadow Drive.

Lt. Kriss Soppe with the Colorado Springs Fire Department said the fire was initially reported on the balcony of one of the apartments, and then spread up the exterior of the building.

He said everyone was able to escape, although two of the residents suffered minor injuries.

In total three units were damaged, and the Red Cross is assisting the displaced families who will need a temporary place to stay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
